The chemical compound, an intravenous general anesthetic, is increasingly being diverted into black-market vape cartridges with dangerous health consequences.
Why Etomidate Is Unsafe for Inhalation
Cardiologist Dr. Fajri Adda’i clarified that etomidate is engineered solely for controlled, clinical administration directly into the bloodstream through an IV line. Inhaling aerosolized anesthetic chemicals completely bypasses medical dosing protocols.
“Usually it is given in IV form. But in vapes, it is inhaled. That is one reason vapes face bans—because they can be mixed with substances like etomidate or marijuana,” Dr. Fajri stated.
Clinical Hazards of Unmeasured Dosing
Because black-market e-liquids lack standardized quality controls, users ingest unmeasured concentrations of etomidate, creating acute toxicity risks:
- Neurological Effects: Rapid chemical uptake induces sudden sedation, loss of consciousness, and vivid hallucinations.
- Respiratory Depression: High doses suppress the respiratory system, impairing the lungs’ ability to deliver oxygen to the body.
- Cardiac and Adrenal Dysfunction: Uncontrolled intake strains the cardiovascular system and damages adrenal gland regulation.
Dr. Fajri cautioned about these uncontrolled outcomes: “If the dose is unmeasured, it can cause reduced consciousness, respiratory tract depression, lung depression, heart depression, and severe complications. It can lead to death later or cause adrenal disorders. The dosage is completely out of control.”
