Dr. Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor has issued a warning advising patients to avoid vaping while using GLP-1 weight-loss injections. Although no direct chemical conflict exists, combining nicotine with medications like Wegovy or Mounjaro worsens stomach irritation and dehydration.
How Nicotine Worsens GLP-1 Side Effects
Both nicotine and GLP-1 agonists independently affect the digestive system. When used together, their impact on the stomach is compounded, leading to severe discomfort for the patient.
“While there is no direct chemical conflict between nicotine vapes and GLP-1 weight-loss treatments like Wegovy and Mounjaro, combining the two can worsen gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and acid reflux,” Dr. Wyllie explained. “This is because both nicotine and weight-loss injections can irritate the stomach.”
Increased Risk of Dehydration
Dehydration is another primary concern for patients combining these treatments. GLP-1 injections slow digestion and reduce appetite, which often leads to lower daily fluid intake. If a patient experiences vomiting, the risk escalates.
“Smoking or vaping nicotine products, combined with GLP-1 injection side effects like vomiting or reduced fluid intake, can also increase the risk of dehydration, so it is generally not advised,” Dr. Wyllie noted. She urges anyone considering weight-loss injections to discuss their smoking and vaping habits with a healthcare provider first.
GLP-1 Impact on Nicotine Cravings
Despite the risks, some patients find it easier to quit vaping after starting weight-loss jabs. GLP-1 medications mimic gut hormones to control hunger, but they also appear to affect brain pathways associated with impulse control.
The GLP-1 report, “Signal in the Food Noise,” found that 24.4% of users who smoked before starting their weight-loss treatment reported a reduced desire for tobacco and nicotine.
However, Dr. Wyllie cautioned that these findings do not make GLP-1s a recognized quitting aid. “While early findings might suggest that these medicines may influence craving pathways, they are not approved to be used to help quit smoking or vaping,” she said.
