Secondhand Vaping Risks: Doctors Warn It’s Not Harmless

While vaping is often seen as a safer alternative to smoking, experts warn that secondhand exposure to vape aerosol is not harmless. Dr. Humberto Choi, a pulmonologist at Cleveland Clinic, clarifies that e-cigarettes release an aerosol containing nicotine, ultrafine particles, and potential lung irritants, rather than just water vapor.

Research indicates that being near someone vaping, especially indoors, can expose bystanders to nicotine and heavy metals. Dr. Talat Islam from the University of Southern California notes, “If somebody else is vaping in the same area, you’re breathing it – those particles are entering your lungs, where they can do damage.” If you can smell the vape’s scent, you are inhaling its chemicals.

Although long-term effects require further study, short-term exposure can cause coughing, wheezing, or asthma flare-ups. Doctors recommend keeping vaping completely away from vulnerable groups like infants, children, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic respiratory issues.
